Leechburg History (page 2)

The land was part of Armstrong County, which was founded on March 12, 1800 and was named for Col. John Armstrong. Armstrong was an early Indian fighter whose colonial army defeated hostile Indians in a big battle at Kittanning, a large Indian settlement, in 1756. Kittanning was later to become the county seat and was one of the earliest large communities in Western Pennsylvania.

Shortly after its founding, the county was divided into six townships. Leechburg was located in Allegheny Township, which was later split into Gilpin and Bethel Townships. This name change resulted partially because an "Allegheny Twp." already existed across the river in Westmoreland County. [previous]
